Hightown Sunflowers: Is It Worth Visiting With Kids?

If you’re anything like me, summer holidays quickly become a balancing act between keeping the kids entertained and trying not to spend a small fortune every time you leave the house.

That’s why I loved the Hightown Sunflowers.

It’s one of those places that feels like a proper summer tradition, but before we visited I did wonder whether it would actually be worth the admission price. After all, how long can you really spend walking around a sunflower field?

As it turns out… quite a bit longer than I expected.

Hightown Sunflowers: Quick Notes (for the skimmers)

• The sunflower stroll itself takes around 15–20 minutes, but I’d allow 2–3 hours if you’re planning to make the most of everything on site.
• Parking is free, which is always a bonus.
• You don’t need to book in advance.
• The paths are suitable for prams, although the sandy ground means you might need to give them a bit more of a push in places.
• There are toilets and baby changing facilities.
• You’re welcome to bring your own picnic.
• Unfortunately, dogs aren’t allowed.
• Because the sunflower season only lasts for a couple of weeks each year, I’d recommend checking their social media before setting off to make sure the flowers are looking their best.

OK…First things first: the sunflower stroll is absolutely the main event.

If you’ve seen photos of Hightown Sunflowers online and wondered whether they’re as impressive in real life, I’d say yes.

The sunflower stroll itself takes around 15–20 minutes, but it never felt like a case of walking from A to B.

There are little photo opportunities dotted throughout the route, including colourful doorways, floating picture frames and even a rowing boat, which naturally break the walk up and make it feel much more interactive than simply walking through a field.

My 7-year-old daughter loved running ahead to see what was coming next, and because there’s something new every few minutes, it kept her interested all the way around.

Of course, the best bit is choosing your own sunflower to take home.

For £1 a stem, you can cut your own flowers, and I honestly think that’s what made the visit feel a little bit more special. Rather than just looking at the sunflowers, our daughter got to leave with one she’d chosen herself, and it sat proudly on our kitchen table afterwards.

So… is it worth the money?

I think this is probably the biggest question.

Admission is currently £7 for adults and £4 for children aged 2–16, which, let’s be honest, isn’t the cheapest family day out if you’ve got a larger family.

If all you could do was walk through the sunflower field, I’d probably say it was a lovely experience, but perhaps a little expensive for the amount of time you’d spend there.

Thankfully, that’s not the case.

Once you’ve finished the sunflower stroll, there’s plenty more to do if you want to make an afternoon of it.

There’s a giant sandpit, straw bale play area, woodland trail and den-building area, along with lots of picnic benches and open space for the kids to burn off whatever energy they still have left.

For me, that’s what makes the admission price feel worthwhile.

The sunflowers are absolutely why you go.

Everything afterwards is what stops the day feeling over after twenty minutes.

It’s the sort of place where nobody is rushing you.

One thing I really appreciated was how relaxed it all felt.

Nobody’s ushering you through the sunflower field.

Nobody’s trying to sell you the next activity.

If you’ve packed a picnic, there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy it. If not, there’s the Sunflower Shack selling drinks and light refreshments.

We ended up staying far longer than we’d planned simply because there wasn’t any reason to leave.

Our daughter was quite happy moving between the play areas while we actually got five minutes to sit down.

As parents, you’ll know that’s sometimes a novelty in itself!

The Daily Struggle Verdict

Would I recommend it? Yes.

Not because it’s the biggest attraction you’ll visit this summer, but because it delivers exactly what it promises.

The sunflower stroll is beautiful, picking your own flowers genuinely adds to the experience, and the extra play areas mean you can turn what could have been a quick visit into a really lovely afternoon.

If you’re expecting a theme park, this probably isn’t the place for you.

But if you’re looking for a relaxed family day out where the kids can explore, you can enjoy a slower pace and everyone leaves with a sunflower tucked under their arm, I think Hightown Sunflowers is well worth a visit.

Would I go back?

Absolutely.

In fact, I can easily see this becoming one of those summer traditions we look forward to every year.

Perfect for families with younger children who enjoy being outdoors, love exploring and don’t need constant entertainment to have a good time.

If you’re happy packing a picnic, taking your time and letting the kids just be kids for a few hours, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
