Fresh thinking, humming creativity

Got a big project waiting in the wings which needs your focused mental attention? Work on it first thing in the morning to harness your well-rested brain at its most productive. An hour spent working early morning will be worth two hours’ work later in the day.

I wrote my biz book for freelancers and small companies Simple Tips, Smart Ideas: Build a Bigger Better Business before 7am. Then got on with my day job working with clients.

No interruptions, ‘me’ time

how to make the most of your day

Endless interruptions from phone, texts, emails in your working day? By settling yourself into an early morning work routine, other people  won’t be demanding your attention. Your mind will get a clear runway for the task in hand. You’ll get stuff done.

And if you don’t quite finish it? Well – just roll it over to tomorrow morning.

Side hustle space

Building your side hustle?  Carve out that early morning time to brief your partners/team/suppliers on your expectations for the day ahead. Show them that you’re on it. You can review their progress in the evening after work.

By the end of the year, your side hustle could by your main game.

Enjoy the world’s freshness

Need some inspo? Don’t just fill your day with work, early mornings are full of wonder too. Get out into nature – marvel at the sunrise, really hear the clarity of  birds’ song, enjoy the slowly changing seasons, notice the local. Feel at one with yourself, reset your balance for the day ahead. And it’s free.

Plan tomorrow morning tonight

Scrabbling around each morning before you race out the door?  Get set the evening before – packed lunch, paperwork, gym kit. That way you can savour your morning shower, your breakfast.

Be an explorer

In a fixed routine, on train tracks for your life? How dull is that?  Get up and out a bit earlier just a couple of days a week – take a different route to work, walk two stops on the bus or tube, look up at the rooflines, count the trees you pass, buy coffee from different stores, talk to three people you don’t know. Allow yourself the time to explore your world – don’t just pass through it.

When people comment about how I manage to get so much stuff done, I admit to my productive early mornings. And those spring and summer dew-fresh mornings, those crisp frosted winter sunrises are bonuses that I wouldn’t miss for the world.

Follow some of these tips for how to make the most of your day for around four weeks until they become the new norm and start smashing life.
