Self Care at Home with Ashley Elizabeth – Makeup Artist

When was the last time you put on a full face of makeup? I’m going to guess it hasn’t been since Lockdown 3.0 started. As we’re interacting less and less with people on a daily basis the pressure seems to have lifted to have a face of makeup for your workday, hey some of us aren’t even wearing a bra so a Smokey eye is probably not even on the radar.

Before working from home was a thing, I would pretty much wear a face of makeup every day for the office, and not because I was told to do so but because I love makeup.

I love how it makes me feel and even now in quarantine if I need a pick me up, I will always apply some mascara, moisturiser and lipstick and I do this to make me feel more human.

Working from home is hard, this whole lockdown is hard, it can feel abnormal and scary so doing something that makes you feel better within yourself is a must.

So how has lockdown affected the Beauty industry?

I caught up with Make up artist and content creator Ashley Elizabeth @ashleyelizabethmakeup_ to find out.

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you end up with the concept behind your business?

Hi, I’m Ashley Elizabeth and I am a makeup artist from Liverpool. growing up I didn’t really have a clear idea of what I wanted to do as a career and after I finished university way back in 2014 I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. Then somehow, I fell in love with makeup and haven’t looked back since! It’s the first thing in my life I have completely immersed myself in and have a true passion for.  Since I became a makeup artist I’ve always had a love for the more dramatic and colourful looks so they’re the looks I prefer to do on myself. There’s nothing I enjoy more than crazy, technical, colourful & creative makeups.

What do you offer?

I am a working makeup artist offering special occasion & bridal makeup appointments as well as 1:1 and virtual makeup lessons. I also create picture & video  content on social media for brands.

How do you feel now we have entered into another lockdown, how do you keep yourself motivated?

Makeup is my favorite thing in the world to do so I actually look forward to getting up every day and creating something. Even though I’m currently out of work as a makeup artist, being in lockdown is low-key my favourite as I can just sit and create what I want for social media every day! Of course I have my off days so I allow myself that day to just do nothing and wind down and then tomorrow is a fresh start.

What tips and advice can you offer to gain followers on tikotk/Instagram?

Consistency is key! You need to be posting regularly – like once a day if possible. Post quality content, really research how to get the best quality content with what equipment you have. Also give out what you expect back – if you want likes/comments/shares etc you should be engaging in similar ways on other people’s content to show you’re an active user of the platform.

What are your key tips for anyone starting out in this industry?

Practice makes perfect! I know it’s the biggest cliche in the world but it’s so true. I make it my mission to constantly level up my skills by challenging myself and practicing new things until I’m happy with how it’s looking. In makeup you are never done learning as there are always new trends.

What is your greatest achievement? What are you most proud of?

I’m so proud of myself for getting recognised recently by some incredible brands that I admire so much and being able to work alongside them. My Instagram account blew up over the last few months of 2020 so I felt like all of my hard work over the years was beginning to pay off.

Who inspires you in the industry?

100% it has to be Stacey Marie. Her whole style as a makeup artist is incredible, everything is so precise and pristine and of course we got my all time favourite eyeshadow palettes from her. I’m also inspired by a lot of MUA’s from South America. They constantly play with colour & shapes and create some out of this world looks.

What are your ‘daily struggles’ and how do you overcome them?

I’m so lazy! I always have an “ugh cba” kind of attitude, especially in the mornings. What I try to do is limit myself lazy, social media scrolling time in the mornings then force myself out of bed, shower & get dressed – something about putting actual clothes on makes me feel so much more productive!

What is next for you?

Honestly? I really don’t know. My regular job is under threat at the moment purely due to the pandemic so I’m hoping to move more toward content creation as a full time career. So watch this space, you might be seeing a lot more of my face popping up!
