National Lipstick Day: Tips on choosing the right shade

national lipstick day

If there is one makeup item, I cannot live without it’s lipstick. I can probably go completely barefaced as long as I can apply lipstick, without it I feel naked.

Lipstick itself has been around for thousands of years and has come to symbolize so many things for so many different women over the eras.

During the 20th Century lipstick really came into its own with more and more styles, textures and colours. And today the lipstick industry is huge with most major makeup brands offering colours to suit every skin tone.

No matter your style, age or race wearing lipstick can make a bold statement. It can feel empowering and I for one feel like an absolute girl boss when I am rocking a red lipstick.

So, whether you’re just nipping to the shops, on a hot date or out with the girls a lipstick is a staple addition to any makeup bag. Here are just a few of my favourites for you to try this National Lipstick Day.

All about the Nudes

When I last counted how many nude lipsticks, I owned it was well above the 30 mark. Ridiculous I know but honestly finding the perfect nude has always been an obsession of mine and now I have a nude for every occasion.

My die hard nudes will always be a matte lipstick such as Velvet Teddy from Mac Cosmetics, this shade suits an olive complexion and is long lasting as well the perfect Nude Brown shade.

If you’re after a more Nude Pink with a satin finish the Penelope Pink from Charlotte Tilbury is a beautiful shade and works with most skin tones.

Pop of colour

Don’t be afraid of colour when it comes to lipsticks, its probably the one item of make up you can be daring with. Even if you are not a huge lover of makeup, applying a bright colour to your lips can make you look polished and ready for your day!

Jeffree Starr liquid lipsticks are as iconic as he is, long lasting and available in a range of shades they are super easy to apply and they come in a range of different textures.

My favourite is shade Calabasas which is a rich pink colour and when I say this lipstick lasts it really does last for hours!

Girl Boss Reds

There is just something about a red lipstick, I love it.

It makes me feel super confident and when you find the right shade you will never look back.

My go to red for years has always been Ruby Woo from Mac Cosmetics which has a satin finish and if I’m looking for a matte finish, I opt for Relentlessly Red. Both shades are long wearing and when applied with a good lipliner they will not budge!

And you don’t need to spend the big bucks on lipsticks, my kit contains lipsticks from £1.50 right though to £25 so depending on what is important to you and what budget you have to play with I would always suggest starting with the cheaper brands to find the shades and textures you prefer before splashing out.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help at a makeup counter either, sometimes its good to have an opinion on what shades would suit you!

I will always recommend Mac for lipsticks, there is so much choice and their lipsticks really are worth the investment. And this National Lipstick Day they’re offering a free lipstick on every purchase over £30.

Whatever you decide to do, always combine your lipstick with a similar coloured lipliner for the ultimate staying power and remember that make up should be fun! Try those bright colours you have been avoiding and watch how confident you become.
