Sicily, the perfect getaway: situated close to the fondly-named “toe” of Italy, Sicily offers you nature, history, and a delicious cuisine inspired by the ancient epicurean traditions.

Syracuse
Whether you are a professor of the Classics, a history buff, or simply love roaming ancient streets, do not omit this south-eastern town from your itinerary. The Greek and Roman remains in Syracuse draw the tourists. But the island of Ortigia, situated in the centre of the town, is another magnet for visitors. Spend a day exploring this beautiful reminder of ancient worlds, but stay late to experience its nightlife.
Agrigento
The topography of the southern town of Agrigento lends itself to incredible views of ancient temples, juxtaposed against the trees and the sea beyond. The temples date back to the 5th-century B.C. and although earthquakes have battered many of the sites, the incredibly preserved ruins are simply spectacular. Also, attempts to rebuild have met with success. So definitely do not skip the temples of the world-renowned Archeological Park.
Taormina
One of Sicily’s most beautiful towns… definitely a place to enjoy! Tour on foot the vehicle-free main shopping street and check out the locally owned stores. Pay a visit to the beautiful Duomo of San Nicola, built in the 1400 and also known as the “fortress cathedral”. But this town’s best asset is its incredible, breath-taking views. Perched upon a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea, Taormina brings you a full view of Mount Etna, in all its volcanic glory.
Palermo
The authenticity of Palermo will draw you in from the first moment you set foot into this town. Don’t miss the untouched architectural symbols of religion and beauty, such as the Palazzo dei Normanni. If you have a taste for the more eerie icons of the past, visit the Capuchin Catacombs. After doing your fare share of walking around, look forward to a hearty meal at one of the many local restaurants, where you must try the some of the best dishes of the Sicilian cuisine.
Even if archeological sites are not your thing, this romantic island in the Mediterranean sea is so full of beautiful spots, there is something for everyone. In spring, the abundance of flowers in Sicily may be just enough of a bonus to bring you back, year after year.
