What is double cleansing and should you be doing it?

If you are into your skincare like I am you will know all about the benefits of double cleansing.

And if it’s not something you are currently doing as part of your skincare regime this blog post will hopefully convince you WHY you need to switch it up and jump on board.

Your skin will thank you for it.

What is double cleansing and should you be doing it?

So why should we all be double cleansing?

The main benefit of the first cleanse is to break down any makeup, remove the days’ worth of dirt and oil and ultimately (if you’re not using face wipes I may add) clean your skin.

The second cleanse is there to treat your skin, whether that’s to hydrate, smooth or exfoliate this second stage is super important for that gorgeous glowy skin.

Should everyone be double cleansing?

Yes, even if you don’t wear a lot of make-up you’ll be surprised what comes off your skin after a day of pollution, sweat and god knows what else! And if these are not cleansed off your face it can lead to spots, premature ageing and pigmentation.

So, what should we be using?

Anything but wipes!

Okay but seriously for your first cleanse invest in either a cleansing oil or a balm. If you’re not keen on this idea then use a micellar water (not ideal but better than wipes!) This first cleanse will break down any make-up, removing any dirt or bacteria lying on your skin.

I always use a fresh, clean flannel each evening for this stage and try and use an oil-based cleanser. My favourite being the ‘Take the Day Off’ cleansing balm from Clinique. You only need a small amount of this to get a day’s worth of makeup off your skin. It’s also great for sensitive skin and you can even use it around the eye area.

Be really sure to massage the product into your skin before you wash it off.

For my second cleanse I go in with a cream cleanser on some cotton pads. Always go for a cleanser that works for your skin type, so really think about your skin needs before you purchase. I then follow this up with a toner before I begin my skincare regime.

Should you double cleanse twice a day?

No, for me the double cleansing is for the evening after a day of wearing makeup (even minimal makeup) however in the morning you should still be cleansing your face when you wake up. You will be surprised at what comes off after a night of sleep!

So, remember, there is no point in spending money on expensive skin care products if you’re not even doing the basics. Any product works best on a blank canvas.

I promise you a week of double cleansing you will be sure to see a difference in your skin.

Products we have tried and tested and recommend for cleansing…

This is Silk, Silk cream cleanser, £42

A cream cleanser that does what it says on the tin. The silkiest, softest cream cleanser I have ever tried. This is an ideal cleanser for anyone with sensitive or dry skin or for those who feel they lose hydration when they cleanse. An oil-rich cream cleanser, with silk peptides, probiotics, and Vitamin B5, this deeply cleanses without stripping the skin.

Silk peptides have been scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines, improve skin elasticity, improve the skin barrier function, and boost the skin’s natural collagen levels. I love how soft my skin feels when I use this cleanser and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for some added luxury to their cleansing routine.

Zone Face Lift, Rose and Geranium Foaming Facial Cleanser, £20

Made with 7 botanical ingredients, 90% of which are certified organic, this calming foaming cleanser promises to remove even the heaviest makeup. Two pumps of the cleanser are enough to instantly lather on the skin, I love the scent of this cleanser and how soft it leaves my skin post-cleanse. This cleanser includes Rose water which helps to strengthen skin cells and regenerate skin tissues, combined with the apple amino acids to support skin hydration they enhance barrier support, revitalize the skin and leave the skin feeling moisturised rather than dried out.

My favourite thing about this cleanser is the velvety soft feel, it also feels gentle enough on the skin yet somehow manages to take even my mascara off easily without the need to scrub.

SteamCream Cleansing balm, £22

If you have never tried a cleansing balm before, I would highly suggest opting for this one, which I will most definitely be repurchasing. This 3-phase evolution balm can remove makeup, dirt and oil with a grape-sized amount. Apply to a dry face and massage evenly across the face and neck, add some water and watch the balm transform into milk, from there you can rinse with lukewarm water.

Steam cream smells UNREAL! with hints of lavender and neroli I love how this balm can double up as a mask with the ability to leave on the skin for longer for those added skincare benefits. Suitable for sensitive skin and removing eye makeup. Highly recommend!

Lab by NS Biome, Gel to Foam Cleanser, £12

An effective and gentle 3-in-1 Gel to Foam face cleanser is an effective and gentle cleanser which helps skin renewal, removes makeup and cleanses the face from dirt and other pollutants. It’s also budget-friendly and long-lasting as you only need a pea-sized amount per use! For me, this is a real brightening cleanser and after using it every morning followed by my Vitamin C my skin has looked super glowy and bright!

every Lab Biome product contains a unique postbiotic active plus selected fermented botanical extract which delivers targeted skincare benefits. A new brand to me, but one I will be exploring!

When massaging into the skin, avoid the eye area, especially if you are sensitive!

COSRX Low PH Good morning Gel cleanser, £14.70

A super refreshing morning gel cleanser with ingredients that promise to refine the texture of the skin as well as clarifying and remove impurities, The low pH helps to restore the skin’s optimal pH level, protecting it from external aggressors. Ideal as a morning cleanse or as a second cleanse of an evening. I’ve noticed how much firmer my skin feels when I use this cleanser and I love the consistency of a gel, it somehow makes you feel like you are cleansing your makeup away!

It’s also vegan and cruelty-free.
