How to plan a sustainable dinner party at home

At Heaps + Stacks more and more our clients are wanting to launch products or have big bang PR moments and celebrations… But with the caveat that ALL must be sustainable.

In an industry notorious for waste, we are actively doing all we can to change this. Clients are constantly challenging us on the materials we use for set build right the way through to where the flowers are sourced from to make sure all is local or reusable or just simply considered.

However we believe that being sustainable doesn’t need to be ‘make do and mend” or second best or not quite as sexy… we like to turn the notion on its head and make zero waste something that’s elegant and even luxurious!

So with this in mind we have put together quite a few handy tips on how you could recreate a sustainable dinner party in your own home for a fraction of the cost.

The Base

How to plan a sustainable dinner party at home

Tablescapes are where it’s at and for my wedding a few months back, I was more interested in planning the table than my dress! So starting with the base to make your table at home feel more elevated (unless its particularly beautiful) we’d suggest beginning with a cloth for added oomph. Now of course don’t rush out and buy new, there’s loads of things you might already own which could create the wow factor. You might have a Laura Ashley style floral duvet cover which could do the job or perhaps you create something beautiful out of patchworked scraps.

For an event we are running in a few weeks for a denim brand we are actually creating a 30 person full patchworked denim table cloth – which is just going to look stunning.

The Floral

Flowers are shipped in from all over the world… meaning they are mostly not that sustainable. We suggest using dramatic green runners of verdant foliage, such as ferns or even garden herbs which grow locally the UK or even using dried flowers, which can be kept for ever!

If you do decide to go for fresh English florals, then the best thing to do here to make sure they don’t go to waste after the dinner is to donate them to Floral Angels, who are a great charity who recycle event flowers to brighten up peoples days in the community.

Finishing Touches

Shiny and gorgeous, and 100% natural, people are increasing drawn to crystals. We recommend using them for placement cards above each person’s plate – picking a colour or formation which you think represents your guest, then the name itself can be written on seeded paper which can be even planted in the garden after the dinner!
