The Albert Dock’s Floating Cinema Liverpool Review

floating cinema liverpool

The Albert Dock is trying something a bit different this summer and inviting everyone to come down and watch a film on a floating cinema in Liverpool.

Atop a floating pontoon just opposite the Tate Modern art gallery, Independent Liverpool presents a summer of classic flicks to be watched on your choice of either beanbag or deckchair as you sit back on a lush artificial lawn and enjoy the first floating cinema in Liverpool (since I last tried to watch telly in the bath).

Determined not to be ruined by the classic British summer, the venue rests underneath a canopy to protect from the rain and offers blankets for anyone who wants to snuggle up if they’re feeling a bit windy. I’m sure we all know how windy the Albert Dock can get.

A week’s worth of cinema is instore for those who can score tickets, with plenty of nautical themed movies to choose from, including Titanic, Finding Nemo, Castaway and plenty of other films that don’t actually have anything to do with water but are good watches nonetheless.

We were lucky enough to be invited to a special preview screening of Castaway, you know, that Tom Hanks film where he gets stranded on a desert island, grows a great big bushy beard and has regular meltdowns at a beach ball. Delicious food and drink (in the form of cocktails, nibbles and plenty of Chang beer) were provided by Maray and Rosa’s Thai Café.

It’s not just the floating cinema you get to enjoy bobbing on the docks this August, too. There will be storytime workshops for children from the 11th to the 14th, for those interested in health and wellbeing there will be yoga and Tai Chi sessions from the 16th to the 20th and finally, for the football fanatics, there will be a chance to have a kickabout on the 23rd to the 30th.
