Is Hamleys London Worth Visiting? An Honest Mum’s Review (What to Expect + Tips)

If you’ve ever googled the biggest toy shop in the UK, you’ve probably come across Hamleys. Sitting right on Regent Street and with over 250 years behind it, it’s one of those places that feels like a must-do with kids in London.

But… is it actually worth it?

I took my 7-year-old daughter during the Easter holidays – after she’d been excited about it for a full month – so expectations were… dangerously high. And if you’re a parent, you’ll know that can go either way.

Hamleys London Review

Quick Answer: Is Hamleys London worth it?

Yes – but with a plan.

It’s genuinely magical for kids, way more interactive than I expected, and surprisingly not as stressful as places like the Natural History Museum (which, if you’ve been, you’ll understand immediately).

That said… you will spend money. Probably more than you intended.

First Impressions: What It’s Like Walking In

From the second we walked in, it felt like an experience — not just a shop.

  • A butler on the door welcoming kids in
  • Staff in full costume interacting with everyone
  • A giant Easter egg display for photos (with no queue, which shocked me)

Even though it was busy (Easter holidays busy), it didn’t feel overwhelming. There was no pushing, no being herded around — kids could actually explore at their own pace.

Reality check:
I only have one child, so it was easy to keep track of her. If you’ve got multiple kids… they will scatter. There are different floors, escalators, and distractions everywhere.

👉 Top tip:

  • Agree a meeting point
  • Keep younger ones close (yes, even the toddler leash – no judgement here)

The Experience: It’s Basically a Full-On Show

One thing I didn’t expect?

It’s a performance from start to finish.

As well as the brilliant welcome, as we were leaving, there was even a show happening outside with staff getting kids involved. We didn’t stay long (someone was desperate to get home and play with her new toys), but it looked like something you’d actually plan your visit around.

The Best Part (By Far): The Toy Demonstrations

This was my favourite part — and honestly, what makes Hamleys different from any other toy shop.

The staff are so engaging:

  • They pull kids in
  • Make sure everyone gets involved
  • Turn every demo into a mini show

And here’s what surprised me…

👉 It’s not all expensive toys being pushed

Most of the demonstrations we saw were for toys under £15:

  • Slime bubbles (£8 — yes, we bought them)
  • Flying aeroplanes
  • Glitter tattoos
  • Nail art (she got a full manicure on both hands)
  • Magic snow

And the magic tricks demo?

Genuinely unreal. Not just for kids… I was fully invested. It felt like a proper magic show you’d pay for separately.

We did end up buying the magic kit (£30)… but genuinely, I was just as excited to use it as she was.

Is There a Hard Sell?

I fully expected it to feel like one big sales pitch to kids.

But actually? It wasn’t.

Staff were:

  • Relaxed
  • Happy for kids to just watch and play
  • No pressure to buy

At most, they’d point you in the direction of the toy and mention the price. That’s it.

The Build-A-Bear Situation (Brace Yourself)

There’s a big Build-A-Bear section upstairs… and I’ll be honest:

It is very hard to avoid.

And yes – it’s expensive. Painfully so.

I ended up spending around £60 on one bear, which as a parent feels slightly offensive… but also… you’re paying for the experience.

What did impress me though:

The one my daughter wanted (a cinnamon roll kawaii bear) was sold out – or so I thought.

A staff member:

  • Took the display one
  • Unstitched it
  • Unstuffed it
  • Gave it back ready to be “made”

My daughter? Thrilled. Me? Slightly less annoyed about the £60.

Extras: Sweets, Ice Cream & “Just One More Thing…”

At the top, there’s:

  • A sweet shop (build-your-own Millions tube – we paid £8)
  • An ice cream bar

We skipped the ice cream (financial self-control was hanging by a thread at this point), but if you’re making a full day of it, it’s there.

How Long Do You Need?

We were there for nearly 3 hours – and could’ve stayed longer.

So yes, this can absolutely be:
👉 A full afternoon activity
👉 Not just a quick “pop in”

How Much Does It Cost?

Entry is free… but let’s be realistic.

We spent:

  • £60 (Build-A-Bear – me, still recovering)
  • £60 (my daughter’s saved birthday money)

👉 Total: £120

And that was with some restraint.

Top Tips for Visiting Hamleys with Kids

  • Set a budget before you go
(and stick to it – this place is persuasive)
  • Let kids bring their own money
It genuinely helped my daughter think about what she wanted
  • Go earlier in the day if you can
Even when busy, it felt manageable – but I imagine it ramps up
  • Have an exit plan
    Leaving is… not straightforward emotionally
  • Agree a meeting point
Especially if you have more than one child

Final Verdict: Is Hamleys London Worth It?

Yes – it exceeded both of our expectations.

I went in slightly sceptical, wondering if it would be overhyped…
But my daughter said it was even better than she imagined – and I totally get why.

It’s not just a toy shop.
It’s an experience.

Just… go in prepared:

  • For excitement
  • For chaos (the fun kind)
  • And for your bank account to take a small hit
