Packing light with kids? I’d love to meet the person who’s mastered that. Because in reality – especially if you’re a single mum like me – you are the suitcase.
You’ve got:
- Clothes (plus emergency outfit changes for inevitable spills)
- Snacks (that will still somehow not be the right snacks)
- Toiletries
- Comfort items they suddenly can’t live without
And then… the big one: How do you keep them entertained without packing half the toy box?

Because it’s not just the journey – you need something for:
- The plane/train/car
- Waiting around
- Downtime in the room
- That awkward “we’ve got 20 minutes before dinner” window
So here are the space-saving travel toys that actually earn their place in your bag.
1. The Yoto Mini (The Travel Set Is A Game Changer)
We’ve been a Yoto family since my daughter was three – but the Yoto Mini + travel set is a different level when you’re on the move.
Everything fits into one small bag:
- Headphones
- The player
- A selection of story/music cards
- All the chargers you need

And the best part is they can carry it themselves!
It gives them full control over what they listen to – whether that’s stories, music, or (in our case) the same song on repeat 300 times.
It’s perfect for:
- Cars
- Trains
- Flights (especially when the rest of the carriage doesn’t need to hear Chicken Banana)
Also, and this was a big one for us; my daughter still listens to white noise at night. The Yoto Mini meant we could bring that little piece of home with us without packing extra gadgets.

2. Waterproof Kids Camera
If your child loves taking photos, this is one of those quiet wins.
Especially if your trip involves:
- A pool
- The beach
- Basically any water

A waterproof kids camera means they can fully get involved without you hovering like a health and safety officer.
It:
- Encourages independence
- Keeps them entertained for ages
- Gives them something to focus on that isn’t asking you questions every 30 seconds
We came home with about 100 photos… most of them were her toes underwater. I guess art really is subjective.
3. Colouring Books + “Special” Pens
Colouring books are a classic for a reason – they just work.
They’re:
- Lightweight
- Easy to throw in any bag
- Perfect for literally any situation (travel, restaurants, downtime)
- Not usually a complete meltdown if, god forbid, you do leave it behind

My daughter loves the glimmer unicorn colouring books, and when you pair it with “fancy” pens – like colour-changing or magic pens – it suddenly becomes an activity, not just colouring.
We picked some up during our visit to Hamleys (but you can also grab similar ones online), and I’m not exaggerating when I say:
You might actually get to drink a hot coffee without hearing, “Mummmmyyyyy…”
4. Video Walkie Talkies” (This One Is Genuis)
This one isn’t just a toy, it’s a low-key sanity saver.
Video walkie talkies are:
- Fun for kids (they feel very important)
- Great for playing with siblings or new holiday friends
But also… they give you peace of mind.

If you’re somewhere with:
- A large play area
- A resort
- A busy outdoor space
You can keep one on you, knowing if they wander off in the playground (because they will), you’ve got a way to reach them.
It’s that perfect mix of:
- Independence for them
- Control for you
Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need as Much as You Think
This is something I’ve had to learn the hard way: you don’t need to pack entertainment for every second.
Kids will:
- Snack
- Explore
- Ask questions
- Still say they’re bored no matter what you bring
The goal isn’t to eliminate boredom completely. It’s to have a few high-impact, low-bulk options that actually get used.
Because when you’re the one carrying everything… every inch of space matters.
