Inside The Wirral’s Red Fox

red fox wirral review

This month our resident Whatever The Weather Girls visited the Red Fox , Thornton Hough, on The Wirral to see what all the craic is about.

Trish and I crossed the water, once again, to join Anne, to sample the menu and vibe at the Red Fox, a beautiful old brick and sandstone hall over on the Wirral, with extensive grounds, a well stocked bar, roaring fires and a variety of rooms where you can enjoy a first class meal and relax.

It was a pleasure to be welcomed and looked after by Mike, a friendly supervisor, especially after running the gauntlet of the ferocious wind and rain outdoors!

Straight away, we found the Red Fox to be extremely spacious, warm, cozy and welcoming. What a good start to our adventures over on the Wirral!

Red Fox Wirral Owners Ethos

The Red Fox Wirral has a long, colourful history, and in 2014, Brunning & Price added the property to their growing portfolio and carried out extensive alterations to create this attractive addition to their restaurant chain.

And you’ll all be glad to know that The Red Fox is a family and dog friendly high-end gastro pub/restaurant.

The Drinks

Trish and I opted for Bloom Jasmine and Rose Gin with Fever Tree Aromatic tonic while Anne sampled the Liverpool Pomegranite Gin topped with Prosecco.

The Food

As a starter, I ordered the vegan chestnut mushroom with Polenta salad which didn’t sound very appetizing to me but turned out to be delicious. Trish went with the stilton mulled pear which she loved and Anne opted for the potted salmon with brown crab which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Our mains at The Red Fox Wirral were vegan carrot, lentil and kidney bean haggis, everything was tasty except the haggis which I found to be a little bitter, the girls tried it and said it did taste like haggis, something I’ve never eaten, so obviously a good replacement.

Anne just loved her chicken, ham and leek pie and Trish thought her braised beef rendang was cooked to perfection, although a little more sauce would have been appreciated.

The girls shared a desert, chocolate and orange steamed  sponge with white chocolate custard which was described as utterly divine!

The Chatter

Given the Red Fox is dog friendly, Anne brought along her little Westie, Meg, as an honorary Whatever the Weather Girl. Meg behaved beautifully, charming all who came across her and Mike did a great job of spoiling her and keeping her bowl topped up with water.

As we are planning a weekend away, much discussion revolved around finalizing plans, we can’t wait to play out!

We discussed the dreaded coronavirus; we were all horrified to hear of so many incidences of blatant racism and violence towards the Chinese, how sad that many sit alone on public transport and are literally terrified to cough in public!

Floods and extreme weather came up, especially as most of the wirral seemed to be under several inches of water. All three of us are totally baffled as to why builders keep building houses on flood plains!

2020 sure seems apocalyptic on so many levels, we can’t recall a year starting so dramatically.

We were laughing at a story of a 90 year old lady celebrating her 23rd birthday due to the leap year.

Anne gave Trish and I pens and book markers to celebrate her volunteer- run library celebrating ten years. These little trinkets raise valuable funds which help keep the library running.
