Isle of Man has never been on my travel bucket list, but after being surprised with a weekend getaway a couple of years ago for my birthday, I absolutely would recommend you add it to yours!

The Isle of Man has a legendary history, absolutely beautiful scenery and loads of fun things to do in Douglas, the capital (where we stayed). I’ve put together a list of some of the best places, attractions, restaurants and bars that we visiting during time there…

Things to do in the Isle of Man: The TT

The Isle of Man is we’ll known for the TT (tourist trophy) racing event that it plays host to every year. It is well known as being one of the most dangerous races in the world! Usually held in May / June for 2 weeks, the first week being a proactive week before the main event.

If you’re planning to visit whilst the TT is on hotel prices will skyrocket, so either book way in advance or just book flights and camp somewhere! If you do decide to camp, order a tent to be delivered to store over there so you save money on luggage.

Things to do in the Isle of Man: Manx Museum

One of my favourite things to do when I visit a new place is to check out the local museum and learn all about the history of the place, I feel like it gives you a better feel for the place and enables you to fully appreciate the culture.

The Manx National Museum of Isle of Man, is home to all of the islands history from the magical fairies to the TT racing bikes. It’s such a fascinating place to visit to learn about the heritage and it’s free to enter – bonus!

Things to do in the Isle of Man: Steam Railway

Travel old school on a Victorian steam train and journey across the countryside from Douglas to Port Erin. We got the train too late in the day to spend enough time in Port Erin, but from what we did see it was beautiful and very Picturesque.

I would recommend planning your journey to start mid morning and hop on and off the train to view all the other places along the route and end in Port Erin for late dinner and sunset views.

Things to do in the Isle of Man: End of the pier

The pier is beautiful at night for a stroll along the water. If you’re planning a visit between September and February then wrap up as it gets absolutely freezing! We went in November and planned our trip around Bonfire Night, they have an amazing display on the pier!

Things to do in the Isle of Man: Camera Obscura

Built in Victorian times the Camera Obscura is an interesting phenomenon discovered by the Greeks many years ago. Via methods of light and mirrors, it reflects images of the surrounding area onto large white screens within the dark confines of the building.

If you’re staying in Douglas, it’s a long walk up the hill but the views along the way make it completely worth it. We didn’t get to see the attraction fully, but I’ve added it onto this list as I would have loved to have gone inside! I later learned that it is run by volunteers and that’s why it’s only open during weekends and bank holidays.

Things to do in the Isle of Man: Port Erin

In the south-west of Isle of Man, Port Erin is a beautiful little seaside village just a short distance from Douglas. You can take the steam train or bus, which both take around an hour or you can travel by car if you’ve hired one, in around half an hour. There are a few main attractions that you can visit if you plan a walk in the area; the Calf of Man lighthouse, Castle Rushen and Mull Hill.

We didn’t plan our journey as well as we should have, we wanted to explore some of the walking trails but we ended up in the area for sunset which was unreal!

Where to stay in the Isle of Man: Best Western Palace Hotel & Casino

We stayed at the Best Western Palace Hotel & Casino, Isle of Man is well known for being ridiculously expensive but this hotel seemed to be the best price in the area of Douglas. The hotel wasn’t anything special in terms of luxury, but it was a great atmosphere, the staff were friendly and the in house Casino and bar was ideal for chilling in the evening.

Where to have breakfast in Douglas, Isle of Man: The Eatery

Out of the 4 places that we ate breakfast, 2 locations really stood out and both were on my top breakfasts list of all time! The first was a little cafe called The Eatery on Duke Street, right in the centre of Douglas Shopping Centre.

We had the Vegan breakfast which consisted of poached eggs, fried potatoes, halloumi, french toast and avocado! The second was the Sefton hotel that we stumbled across when walking along the Pier, we noticed the sign outside saying full english and it did not disappoint!

Where to drink in the Isle of Man: Bath & Bottle

Bath & Bottle is the best for cocktails, but as it’s well know for it, it gets extremely busy during weekends, so get there early if you want a table. We sampled every cocktail from the menu and the Mai Thai was an absolute winner.

Where to eat in the Isle of Man: Wine Down

Douglas is full of nice restaurants, but after researching an speaking to the locals, Macfarlanes came highly recommend. Based on Duke Street, it has since changed its name and relaunched as ‘Wine Down’ but the reviews on TripAdvisor remain highly rated.

We made a booking for the Saturday night before the firework display. The venue was beautiful and atmosphere was laid back, chilled and the staff really friendly! The head chef recommended the goats cheese souffle so we ordered that for starter, Manx black and gold Filet Mignon for the main and for dessert the chocolate cheesecake – best cake I’ve ever had!

Shopping in Douglas, Isle of Man

There’s isn’t much in terms of high street shops, the main pace for shopping is The Strand Shopping Centre. There are a couple of fashion brands, beauty shops etc, but if you walk up the side streets in the centre, there are loads of independent boutiques and cute coffee shops.
